Wrap Smarter, Waste Less: Stepping Hill Hospital’s Shift to Speedwrap Pro® & Ecocling™
Behind every meal served at Stepping Hill Hospital is a commitment to care not just for patients but for the planet too. Preparing around 2,000 meals a day means the hospital’s kitchen plays a big role in supporting the NHS’s Net Zero ambitions.
Looking to reduce waste, use more sustainable products, and streamline their catering operations, the team at Stepping Hill found the ideal partner in Prowrap’s Speedwrap Pro dispenser and Ecocling™ PVC-free cling film.
Together, they’re proving that delivering great food and protecting the environment can go hand in hand.
Supporting net zero in practice
Since the NHS introduced its Sustainable Development Programme in 2008, every hospital trust has been challenged to decarbonise services. Using sustainable products, reducing waste and choosing UK-made alternatives are all part of that mission. For Stepping Hill’s catering team, Prowrap offered a way to make immediate, measurable progress.
The Speedwrap Pro is manufactured in the UK, helping to reduce transport emissions and support UK industry. It’s also backed by Prowrap’s Dispenser Recycling Scheme, which ensures dispensers at the end of their life can be collected and remanufactured into new products in the Prowrap Group range. Even the refill rolls support a circular approach: since they have no plastic adapters, their cardboard cores are fully recyclable at end of use, helping to eliminate more than 15 tonnes of CO₂ every year.
The hospital’s greatest gain, however, has come from introducing Ecocling. Unlike many alternatives, Ecocling can keep up with the demands of Stepping Hill’s kitchen.
Minimise waste, maximise value
This change has also had an immediate impact on safety and efficiency. Supported by the Speedwrap Pro® and its patented safety blade, the hospital kitchen avoids cuts and other LTIs.
“We started using the Speedwrap Pro just under two years ago, and it immediately made a difference,” says Erica Bell, Catering Support Services Manager for the Stockport NHS Trust. “The blade is concealed and helps reduce any risk of possible accidents.”
The safety blade’s intuitive design, where the sharp edge is protected except for when staff press down on the lid to make a cut, means getting the most out of the Speedwrap Pro couldn’t be simpler. Alongside the dispenser’s other features, such as the antimicrobial Biocote™ protection that reduces bacteria and makes cleaning a breeze, the Speedwrap Pro is ideal for a kitchen with a range of abilities represented.
“We’ve got diverse kitchen staff here, with a range of experience levels,” Erica tells us, “And the simplicity of the Speedwrap Pro absolutely helps us keep everything running smoothly.”
Combined with Ecocling, the Speedwrap Pro is delivering measurable gains for the hospital kitchen, with staff already having noticed how it outperforms other PVC-free cling films.
“We’ve tried other PVC-free products, but they didn’t stick, and we’ve had lots of comments from the chefs and the catering assistants that Ecocling is really good quality as well as being PVC-free,” Erica added.
