Prowrap is continuing to deliver on its mission to reduce the carbon footprint of the foodservice sector with its latest partnership, which will see Mexican street food chain Tortilla adopt the Speedwrap Pro 300 Dispenser across its 74 UK sites. The move is expected to eliminate a total of over 1,200kg of CO2 emissions per year.

The partnership between Prowrap, Tortilla, and Disposables & Catering Supplies (DCS) comes as foodservice outlets are under increasing pressure to reduce their Scope 3 emissions. Speedwrap Pro supports this thanks to its plastic-free refill rolls, which fit the dispenser without the use of plastic adapter inserts. Removing these adapters will reduce 591kg in CO2 from Tortilla’s supply chain per year, as well as 178kg of plastic waste. In addition, the transport emissions saved by switching to the UK-made Speedwrap Pro 300 total 733kg over the course of a year – equivalent to charging 1.5 million smartphones.

Emily Bagshaw, Central Operations Director at Tortilla, was delighted with the Speedwrap Pro 300, saying “Delivering  fresh, customisable meals without the environmental guilt is core to our mission at Tortilla. We’re thrilled with the Speedwrap Pro, which delivers outstanding performance and efficiency in our stores, while helping us to reduce our supply chain emissions.”

James Stacey, Sales Director of DCS, was also thrilled to see sustainability gains shared throughout the supply chain. “It has been a pleasure to collaborate with Prowrap and Tortilla on this project. We’re proud to work with like-minded partners to set the standard for a more sustainable foodservice sector.”

To illustrate the scale of the plastic savings that Tortilla now enjoys, Europe’s largest fast-casual Mexican restaurant operator previously used a food wrapping solution that required refill rolls to feature plastic adapter inserts. Tortilla estimates that used 27,450 of these adapters every year. If they were stacked on top of one another, they would reach 823m into the air – just 5m short of the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building.

Ben Creeth, Prowrap’s sustainability analyst, said the move highlights the mountains of hidden waste that build up at foodservice outlets across the UK. “These small plastic adapters are tiny, but they add up quickly,” he said. “And each one comes with a hidden cost. At Prowrap, we’re proud to be leading the way by shining a spotlight on these hidden costs – but more than that, we’re helping our customers take action, cut waste, and reduce costs with Speedwrap Pro.

“In this case, Tortilla has successfully eliminated a Burj Khalifa-size stack of plastic waste from their supply chain. Just imagine how much unnecessary plastic waste we could eliminate if every other foodservice chain switched to the Speedwrap Pro.”

Speedwrap Pro is an award-winning food wrapping dispenser that is made in the UK, making it a leading solution for foodservice businesses looking to reduce their Scope 3 emissions.
