It’s no surprise that a company named after one of the world’s most popular flatbreads, Tortilla, knows a thing or two about wrapping. The Mexican Street food chain operates 74 sites across the UK, each of which gets through a significant amount of cling film each day. However, with foodservice outlets everywhere under pressure to reduce their carbon footprint, Tortilla found itself looking for new ways to reduce its Scope 3 emissions and minimise plastic waste from its wrapping solutions.

This mission led Tortilla to Prowrap. Supported by the Speedwrap Pro 300, the industry-leading innovation in wrapping dispenser technology, Tortilla has since eliminated more than 1,200kg of CO2 emissions from its operations each year, largely as a result of moving away from dispensers that need plastic inserts in their refill rolls. Combined with the benefits offered by the Speedwrap Pro Dispenser Recycling Scheme, Tortilla is reducing its Scope 3 emissions and supporting support plastic waste reduction across the foodservice sector.

Why Speedwrap Pro?

Prior to adopting the Speedwrap Pro 300, Tortilla was using a food wrapping solution that required its refill rolls to include plastic inserts. The company would go through 27,450 of these adaptors each year, resulting in large quantities of plastic waste being generated. In fact, stacking these inserts on top of each other would create a tower 823m high – just 5m short of the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building!

In contrast, the Speedwrap Pro’s refill rolls substitute plastic for a notched cardboard core. This design maintains the rigidity and resilience of plastic with a much smaller impact on the environment. Switching to cardboard means each refill roll removes 13g of plastic from the supply chain, and although this may not seem much, across Prowrap’s customer base it is equivalent to eliminating over 15 tonnes of CO2 each year.

These carbon savings are compounded by Prowrap’s decision to move manufacturing of the Speedwrap Pro from China back to the UK. The associated reduction in transport emissions results in 16.2 tonnes of CO2 being saved per annum. Coupled with the Speedwrap Pro Dispenser Recycling Scheme, which sees old, broken, or unwanted wrapping dispensers of any make collected and recycled into new products, it’s easy to see why Tortilla chose the Speedwrap Pro as its partner in reducing carbon emissions.

The safer, smarter solution

These sustainability benefits are in addition to the impact that the Speedwrap Pro has had on safety and efficiency for Tortilla. This dispenser is built for the pressures and rigours of busy professional kitchens, featuring a fully enclosed safety blade that has proven to prevent cuts, and a BioCote® antimicrobial treatment that keeps cleaning simple and eliminates 99% of bacteria and fungi within 2 hours. It is designed from the ground up to make wrapping easier for busy chefs, reducing waste and enhancing safety to provide measurable gains.

“At Prowrap, we’re proud to support forward-thinking brands like Tortilla in making measurable, practical changes that deliver real sustainability wins,” said Bryony Barlow, Commercial Director at Prowrap. “The Speedwrap Pro helps businesses take tangible steps toward reducing emissions and cutting plastic waste from their supply chains. By choosing our dispenser, Tortilla has eliminated the equivalent of a plastic tower almost as tall as the Burj Khalifa – proof that small design changes can make a big environmental impact.”
